At
10 years of age, I was encouraged to learn a musical instrument. I choose
the guitar. My instructor insisted on teaching me songs I didn’t
like listening to, much less learn to play. One day, a drunk wandered
into the lesson studio and in no time my instructor and the drunk were
in a fistfight. I felt bad for the instructor but happily, the incident
turned into my ticket to quit guitar lessons.
While
attending college, I was given a guitar for my birthday. I bought a
laminate of chord charts and managed to learn to play two songs - Blackbird
and a bluesy instrumental tune by Mississippi John Hurt. That’s
it. Whenever I picked up the guitar, I played my 2-song repertoire and
walked away.
One
day, I got a piano. I taught myself to play and about a year later wrote,
She’s Got My Heart. I took the song
to a recording studio and had a blast watching the producer and the musicians
record my song. I entered the song into a songwriting contest hosted by
a local radio show. Out of hundreds of entries, my song took 2nd place.
Many years later, I saw an ad in a local paper for a Guitar Lab at the
Modern Music Academy in San Luis Obispo, CA. Whoa! A guitar lab? I thought
his might be my chance to learn a new song. I dropped in to meet the owners
and found a fully equipped recording studio with performance stage. I
found out the songs they used for instruction included the very stuff
I listened to. I think I was the first student to arrive for class each
and every week. Needless to say, I was inspired.
By the end of the first year, I had written and recorded my first CD,
Out of Nowhere. Soon after, I had the good
fortune to meet Jennifer Young, Travis Larson and Dale Moon of The Travis
Larson Band. These guys are a
truly talented bunch of musicians. Travis has become my mentor, assisting
me in production and teaching me to record with ProTools software. Today,
I continue to write and record music. I am in the process of marketing
my music to an international repertoire of television and film supervisors.
Stay tuned for more!
